International Harvester had been operating a factory store in the Rochester area until the recession of 1979; at that time International Harvester closed the Rochester location in favor of servicing the entire region from a factory store in Syracuse, New York.
In January of 1983, Malcuria Brother Motor Truck Corporation was formed as an International dealership by Sam Malcuria. It originally operated exclusively from a small facility located in Geneva, New York. From 1979 to 1985 International had no specific representation in Rochester or the surrounding area.
In November of 1989, Malcuria Brothers sold the dealership to a group of eleven investors. The new dealership, Regional International Corporation ("Regional") acquired $2,237,000 in inventory. Regional continued to operate both the Rochester and Geneva locations. The work force was expanded to include the outside parts salespeople, an expanded new truck sales department, and created a used truck sales department. In many ways, Regional was the birth of a new dealership rather than a continuation of the old. New personnel, capital, and philosophies were brought in by Jim Carello, the new Dealer Principal. Regional was very successful at targeting municipal and fleet customers in the truck sales department and soon the dealership began to feel growing pains.
In 1992, the Rochester dealership moved to its present location in Henrietta, New York. Approximately 15 minutes from downtown Rochester, it now occupies the former Fruehauf Trailer Service location, a 30,000 square foot facility located next to the New York State Thruway. This new building solved many of the physical inefficiencies and problems of the smaller facility; and has allowed for an expanded customer base and the utilization of strategic target marketing to expand market share and profitability.
In 2003, Regional expanded its territory for International product sales to include six more counties in Western New York and four counties in Pennsylvania. Associate Dealer alliances were formed with Boyles Motor Sales, Main Tire Exchange, and Portville Truck and Auto to effectively service the needs of our expanded customer base.
In 2005, Regional purchased Hanson International in Buffalo, which services Erie and Niagara counties. Renamed Regional International of Western New York Inc., this location now gives us complete access to all of Western New York.
Currently, Regional has more than 155 full-time employees and keeps average inventories of $11,000,000 including trucks, trailers, and parts. With a team oriented selling style and an understanding of total customer satisfaction as a key goal for success, Regional plans to excel even further in the future.
